Choosing between KCET and IISc: Need some mother-to-mother advice

I have been seeing a lot of discussions lately about students aiming for KCET versus IISc. As a parent, I know how confusing and stressful this phase can be for both us and our kids. Both are amazing goals, but they lead to very different paths. I would love to hear your honest thoughts or experiences on how to help our children decide which route aligns better with their future.

I have seen so many parents pushing for IISc just for the brand name, but the curriculum is very intense. Please check if your child is mentally prepared for that kind of academic load before you finalize anything.

Beta, IISc is a completely different league if your child is inclined towards core research and sciences. My daughter was confused last year, but we spoke to a professor who clarified that unless the child is genuinely passionate about pure science, KCET-based engineering might be a safer, more practical bet for a stable career.

Hi, my daughter is currently in 12th and we had the same dilemma last month. Honestly, IISc is a dream for pure research and science, whereas KCET is more for engineering streams like CS or Electronics. If your child is very inclined towards physics or math theory, push for IISc, but for a solid professional job market later, KCET might be the safer bet. Have you asked your child if they prefer lab work or corporate engineering roles?

Always focus on what the child wants, not what the neighbors are saying. My niece chose a top local college via KCET to stay close to home, and she is doing just as well as her friends in elite institutes. It is all about the effort they put in.

For IISc, the KVPY or JEE Advanced route is very rigorous. Does your child enjoy spending hours in the lab or are they more into coding and practical engineering? That usually makes the decision very easy for them.

My son cleared the KVPY exam and opted for IISc. It’s a completely different league if they are passionate about research, but please be prepared that the academic pressure there is intense. KCET is good for local engineering, but IISc gives a global edge if they want to pursue a PhD later.

Thanks for posting this. I think it really depends on whether your child wants to stay in the city for engineering or go for a top-tier science research institute. My neighbor's boy chose KCET for the job security, so I'd suggest you try sitting down with a career counselor who understands the difference in curriculum.

Is your child in 12th standard currently? My son just finished his first year in engineering through KCET and honestly, the pressure is immense. If they have the aptitude for IISc, let them go for it, because that pedigree is unmatched.
