· Bengaluru2d agoIt is mandatory, but there are exemptions for parents who have moved to the state recently. My son joined last year from Delhi, and the school asked us to submit a transfer certificate to apply for an exemption from the language requirement. Call the admin desk and ask them about the 'non-native' exemption policy.

· Bengaluru1d agoHonestly, it is better if they learn the basics. My elder one struggled initially, but with a local tutor, he picked it up quite well in a few months. It is not as tough as it sounds if they start early.

· Bengaluru1d agoYes, this is correct. Even if your child is exempt due to special needs or specific board rules, the school will likely still require them to enroll in basic Kannada classes. Have you checked the latest circular on your school's portal?

· Bengaluru1d agoHi, yes, the Karnataka government has made Kannada mandatory as a language subject for all boards including CBSE and ICSE up to 10th grade. My daughter is in 8th standard at a CBSE school here in Bangalore, and she has to take it as a second language. You should definitely check with your school office as some schools offer it at a basic level for students who have moved from other states.

· Bengaluru1d agoI heard the same thing, but it seems to vary by school management. Are you referring to schools under the state board or private international schools? Some international schools are still fighting this in court, so please clarify which board your child is in before panicking.

· Bengaluru15h agoIt is compulsory across all schools in Karnataka now. My son was struggling initially since we are from Delhi, but the school provides a 'Kannada Kali' module which is much easier than the regular syllabus. Suggest you try to get hold of the textbook early so they can start practicing basic script over the holidays.

· Bengaluru5h agoYes, the Karnataka government has made Kannada Language Learning Act mandatory for all schools, including ICSE and CBSE boards. My daughter is in 8th grade at a private school, and they have introduced it as a third language, but she has to take exams for it now. You should definitely check with your school office regarding their specific implementation timeline.

· Bengaluru2h agoFrom what I know, all boards have to comply now. My neighbor’s son is in 10th and they had to clear the Kannada paper to get the board certificate. Don't take it lightly, make sure the school provides proper study material.
