Will IB be too easy for ICSE students?

Hi everyone, I wanted to get your thoughts on this. Some parents mention that students coming from an ICSE background might find the IB curriculum quite easy compared to the intense syllabus they've been used to. Has anyone else experienced this transition? Would love to hear if your kids found it manageable or if it was actually a breeze for them.

It is definitely manageable if they have been in a top-tier ICSE school. The transition wasn't a 'breeze' for us, but the study habits developed in ICSE helped my daughter stay organized. Just keep a close eye on their TOK progress from the very beginning.

Don't fall for the 'it's a breeze' trap! My daughter moved from ICSE to IB last year, and while the content might feel familiar initially, the way of writing answers is completely different. IB expects a lot of critical thinking and self-reflection, whereas ICSE is more about rote learning and covering a vast syllabus. It's not easier, just a different type of challenge.

My son made the shift in Grade 11 and he actually found the workload quite manageable compared to the endless ICSE assignments. He finally got some time to pursue his sports, which was a huge relief for us. Are you looking at the Diploma Programme or the MYP level?

Hi, don't make the mistake of thinking IB is 'easy' just because the content isn't as rote-heavy as ICSE. My daughter moved to IBDP last year and while she found the math concepts familiar, the internal assessments and the sheer amount of written reflection caught her off guard. It’s not about difficulty, it’s about a complete shift in how they evaluate you.

I have seen many ICSE kids struggle initially because IB requires so much independence for their IAs and Extended Essay. If your child is used to being spoon-fed notes in coaching classes, they will find the transition quite tough, honestly. It’s better to focus on their time management skills rather than worrying about the syllabus load.

I agree with the previous parent. ICSE makes them hardworking, but IB makes them think. If your child is good at memorizing, they might struggle initially with the critical thinking required in IB. My son took six months to adjust to the style of essay writing, so don't expect a breeze!

Is your child planning to go abroad for college? That should be the bigger deciding factor than just ease of curriculum. ICSE is great for building a strong foundation, but IB really helps with college admissions essays and overall profile building.

Actually, many kids from ICSE find the subject depth in IB quite refreshing. My nephew moved to IB in Grade 11 and he is actually enjoying it more because he can choose his subjects. Just ensure your child is prepared for the CAS requirements, as that adds a lot of pressure outside of regular studies.
