Are Olympiad exams really necessary?

Is it really important for kids to enroll in Olympiad coaching, or can they just prepare on their own? Please excuse my ignorance, but do these certificates actually count for anything later on, like for school admissions or profiles? Just trying to understand if the extra pressure is worth it.

Total waste of time and money in my opinion. Better to focus on foundation-building than these certificate-chasing marathons.

Does anyone know if these Olympiads help with scholarship tests? I’ve heard rumors that some international schools look for these ranks, but I haven't seen any concrete benefit for domestic admissions yet. My neighbor’s kid did it, but she said it didn't really change anything for his profile.

We enrolled our boy in a coaching center last year and frankly, it was a waste of time. He was so tired after school that he started losing interest in his regular studies. If you really want them to do it, just buy a few workbooks and let them solve one chapter per week at their own pace.

Honestly, don't stress too much about the certificates. My daughter appeared for SOF exams in grade 4, but we didn't do any special coaching. It's good for logical thinking and exposure to competitive formats, but school marks are still the main thing that matters for future admissions.

Honestly, don't stress too much about the certificates for admissions, as most top schools barely look at them during the primary years. My daughter participated in SOF last year, and I realized that while it’s great for sharpening her analytical skills beyond the NCERT syllabus, the coaching classes are just a money-making racket. I would suggest you try getting the practice workbooks from the local bookstore and let your child prep at their own pace at home; if they enjoy the challenge, then it’s worth it, otherwise don't add the extra pressure.

I have seen so many parents pushing their kids into Olympiads just for the sake of a 'profile,' but at the end of the day, it's the conceptual clarity that actually helps in middle school. My son does them only for the fun of solving tricky puzzles, not for the results. Is your child naturally inclined towards math or science? If they enjoy it, let them do it, but skip the expensive coaching institutes.

My view is that Olympiads are great only if the child enjoys the challenge. Don't force it just for the sake of a profile boost. If your child is naturally curious about Math or Science, let them try once to see if they like the level of questioning. If they are already struggling with the school syllabus, better to focus on basics first.

I suggest you try the self-study route first. We bought the previous years' papers from Amazon for my son and he did those on weekends. It builds the concept foundation without the burnout of extra coaching classes, which are honestly quite expensive and draining for kids.
