Question about French homework expectations

As a French teacher myself, I wanted to weigh in on how the subject works. In my experience, French doesn't usually require long, essay-style answers; the curriculum is mostly focused on one-word responses and short phrases. Just wanted to share this perspective for those wondering about the workload!

That is interesting to hear. In our school, the French teacher is quite strict and gives lengthy worksheets almost every weekend. Do you suggest any good online apps for vocabulary building so my daughter can handle these phrases more confidently?

My experience is a bit different. Even for the short answers, the teacher is very strict about the accents and spelling. If you miss one 'accent grave', they deduct marks, even if the word is correct. Do you suggest we focus more on the grammar rules or just keep drilling the vocabulary?

I have seen the opposite in our school, to be honest. The teacher expects them to write short paragraphs describing their daily routine or hobbies in French. Is it possible that the workload changes significantly once they reach the higher grades?

That is a relief to hear! I was getting worried seeing my son spend two hours on French homework. Turns out he was just overcomplicating the answers when he only needed simple phrases. Thanks for clarifying.

Very useful info. Does anyone have recommendations for good apps to help with this vocab practice? My son is struggling to memorize the verb conjugations for these short responses.

That’s a relief to hear! My daughter used to struggle with the longer formats in other languages, so she finds the French homework much more manageable now.

Thank you for this perspective! My son is in Grade 7 at a school following the CBSE board, and frankly, the French teacher there is very particular about grammar and conjugation even in those one-word answers. It is good to know that the focus remains on short phrases, as I was worried he would need to write long paragraphs soon.

Thank you for this perspective! My daughter is in Grade 7 and she often gets frustrated because she tries to write long sentences, which the teacher then marks wrong. I will tell her to focus more on the vocabulary and short phrases now, as you suggested.
