Is the three-language policy compulsory this year?

Hi everyone, I wanted to confirm if the three-language policy is now mandatory. We moved to Hyderabad last year and my son is still adjusting. I heard that from this academic year onwards, the school is strictly following this policy. Can any other parents clarify if this applies to all grades or if there are any exceptions? Thanks for your help!

Yes, it is definitely becoming mandatory across most private schools here. We had to opt for Hindi as the third language last year. Has the school office provided you with the list of offered languages yet? You should ask them if they have a 'beginner's track' for kids who have just moved to the city.

Hi, welcome to Hyderabad! In our school, the three-language policy is mandatory from Class 6 onwards. If your son is in primary, he might just have to do two, but definitely check the school circular as they keep changing the rules every session.

It really depends on your specific school board. My nephew’s school is insisting on it for grades 5 to 8, but they are being quite flexible with the choice of language, allowing students to pick even basic-level options. Don't worry too much, the kids usually pick up the basics faster than we do!

Hi, welcome to Hyderabad! From what I have gathered through the latest circulars, the three-language policy is being enforced quite strictly by the CBSE board this year. My daughter is in Grade 6 and they have already introduced a third language. I suggest you check with your son’s class teacher directly because sometimes they allow exemptions if you have a transfer certificate from a state where that language wasn't taught at all.

It depends entirely on the school's internal management, honestly. Most schools are enforcing it to comply with the NEP guidelines, but some offer exemptions for students moving from non-Hindi or non-Telugu states. Write an email to the principal citing his recent relocation; they usually consider such cases.

My daughter is in Grade 8 and yes, it is strictly implemented this year. We had to choose Telugu as the third language, and honestly, it’s quite a lot of pressure for kids already struggling with the transition. If your son is struggling, maybe talk to the class teacher about opting for a 'foreign language' or a simpler alternative if the board allows it.

Is this policy for all boards or just CBSE? We are in an ICSE school and we haven't received any official notification about a compulsory third language yet. Please clarify which school you are referring to?

Don't worry too much, the school usually conducts remedial classes for the third language if you are a new joiner. My son joined late last year and the teachers were quite accommodating. Just request a meeting with the language HOD.
