IQ tests and school intervention

Should the school be allowed to take direct action without parental consent? I feel they should only proceed after a formal IQ test is conducted by a recognized psychologist and discussed with the parents first. What are your thoughts on this process?

In our school, they have an in-house counselor who does these screenings, but we always have the right to opt-out. Have you checked the parent handbook for the specific clause on interventions? Start there, then request a meeting with the headmistress to set boundaries.

Always ask them for the ‘reason’ for intervention in writing first. Is it academic or behavioral? If it is behavioral, they cannot just decide on their own without involving you in the process.

True, but sometimes schools suggest these interventions because the child is struggling to keep up with the pace. Have you tried asking the teacher for a breakdown of why they feel this is needed? Maybe sit for a casual chat first before making it a legal issue, sometimes they are just trying to help.

I completely agree with you. When my daughter was in 4th grade, the school wanted to put her in a remedial math group without even informing me. I put my foot down and insisted on an external assessment first because these school-conducted screenings are often very subjective and don't tell the whole story. You should definitely demand a meeting with the principal and put your request for an independent evaluation in writing immediately.

This is absolutely unacceptable. My son’s school tried this last year with ‘remedial classes’ without consulting us, and it turned out they were just pushing him to catch up on syllabus he hadn't missed. Please write a formal email to the Principal immediately and mark the school board. Consent is mandatory for any psychological evaluation or behavioral intervention.

Very valid point. Schools should never bypass parents, but do check the school handbook once—sometimes there is a clause about 'academic support' that they might be hiding behind. Always better to have a private psychologist’s report handy so you have a professional opinion to counter their claims.

It is shocking that they would take action without your consent. Is this a new policy in your school? In our experience, the management usually tries to push children into these programs just to improve their own board results, so please stay firm and don't let them label your child without a formal psychologist’s report.

I completely agree with you. Schools often just want to label children to manage them better in class. We insisted on an external assessment from a reputable child psychologist in Bangalore before letting the school touch our daughter’s academic plan. It gave us much better clarity on her actual strengths.
