CBSE vs PUC for Commerce: Which path should we choose?

Hi everyone, I am trying to decide between CBSE and PUC for my child's 11th and 12th grade Commerce stream. I know CBSE is more concept-based and national, but I am wondering how it compares to PUC in terms of workload and college admissions. Has anyone here gone through this choice recently? Any advice on which board provides a better foundation for competitive exams would be really helpful.

Go for CBSE if you want a national standard. PUC is good only if you are targeting local colleges.

My son is in 12th CBSE Commerce, and honestly, the conceptual clarity he got is much better than what his cousins in PUC are experiencing. If your child is planning for CA or CFA, CBSE builds a stronger foundation, though you must prepare for the internal marks pressure. Good luck with the decision!

Depends on what your child wants next. If the goal is purely Karnataka-based CET or keeping it low-pressure, PUC is fine. But for national exposure, definitely go with CBSE.

We opted for PUC because our son wanted to focus purely on CUET and local college admissions in Bangalore. It leaves much more free time for coaching classes compared to CBSE, which keeps them quite occupied with internal assessments and projects. Just check the specific college reputation if you choose PUC, as the environment varies a lot.

It really depends on your child's goal. If they want to get into a top-tier national university, CBSE is the way to go because the exposure is wider. However, if they are eyeing a local degree, PUC is much more relaxed. Have you decided on a coaching center yet?

Is your child planning to attend regular coaching for competitive exams like CLAT or IPMAT? If yes, keep in mind that PUC colleges in Bangalore often have very strict attendance and long hours, which makes balancing external coaching extremely difficult. CBSE schools generally allow a bit more flexibility.

I have seen many students struggle with the transition if they move from CBSE to PUC. My daughter did CBSE throughout and found the PUC syllabus a bit too rote-learning focused for her liking. Suggest you check if your child prefers analytical study or memorization.

My daughter finished her 12th from CBSE and frankly, the concept clarity helped her a lot during her CA Foundation coaching. PUC is more rote-learning heavy, and if your child is planning for professional courses like CA or CFA, CBSE is much better as it aligns with the national syllabus. The workload is manageable if they stay consistent throughout the two years.
