What if the state govt relaxes the age criteria for admissions?

Has anyone thought about what happens if our state govt decides to relax the age criteria for school admissions, similar to what happened in Karnataka last year? Would schools be forced to follow the new rules, or can they still stick to their own internal policies? Just wondering how this usually plays out for parents who might be affected.

I hope they do relax it! My son missed the cutoff by just 15 days last year and we had to wait an entire extra year, which was so frustrating. Does anyone know which department we should approach if the school still tries to insist on their own arbitrary rules?

If the state relaxes it, it becomes a nightmare for the school administration to manage the sudden influx of applications. I have seen schools increase their student-teacher ratio to accommodate the extra kids, which actually ends up hurting the quality of attention our children get in class.

From my experience, if the state government issues a gazette notification, private schools are legally bound to follow it. My daughter's school initially refused to budge on age criteria, but once the Education Department stepped in with a circular, they had to open admissions for the younger batch. Keep an eye on the local news portals, as these things move very quickly once the official order is out.

Schools will always try to cite 'internal policy' to maintain their own comfort, but state rules override everything. Just make sure you keep a copy of the government order handy. When I faced a similar issue, simply mentioning the government mandate during the interview cleared the confusion immediately.

Be careful, even if the government relaxes it, many top-tier schools claim they have 'management quota' or 'discretionary seats' and might still reject kids. It is better to have a backup school in mind just in case they decide to be difficult about the age issue.
