Need advice on kids learning Kannada

Hi everyone, I moved to Bangalore last year with my two kids (in grades 6 and 8). Since we don't know any Kannada, I'm finding it tricky to help them pick it up. Does anyone have any suggestions or resources for beginners that have worked for your children? I’d really appreciate any tips or advice you could share.

I suggest you try the Kannada Pradhikara online modules. My son really struggled with the script initially, but these modules have simple audio-visuals that make it less intimidating for older kids.

We hired a private tutor for an hour on Saturdays just to get the basics of the alphabet down. It’s been three months and my kids are already able to read simple sentences on signboards, which they find quite exciting!

Have you checked if your school offers a 'Kannada for Non-Kannadigas' batch? Many schools have this, and it’s usually much less stressful for the kids because the curriculum is simplified.

Welcome to Bangalore! My daughter was in 7th grade when we moved here, and we used the 'Learn Kannada in 30 days' book by Krishna Gopal Vikal. Honestly, the trick is to get them to watch Kannada movies with subtitles on the weekend; it helped my kids pick up the colloquial tone way faster than the formal school textbooks.

Don't stress too much about the script right now. Just encourage them to learn basic conversational phrases to use with the vegetable vendor or the security guard at your apartment. It builds their confidence, and they won't feel like outsiders.
