Is it worth chasing Grade 1 admissions?

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Grade 1 admissions. Given how competitive and difficult the process is, is it really worth it unless you are absolutely certain about the school for the long haul? I'm wondering if it's better to wait or if parents feel the stress of securing a seat early is just a necessary part of the journey these days.

Honestly, don't overthink it. My daughter just finished Grade 1, and the adjustment period is huge regardless of the school brand. If you have a decent neighborhood school, stick with it and save your energy for the middle school transitions where the curriculum actually gets serious.

I was in your shoes two years ago and chose to wait until Grade 2 for my son. We didn't want the stress of the lottery systems and entrance interviews at age five. Honestly, he was much more settled and confident by the time he started, and we didn't miss out on anything academic-wise.

It’s a rat race, no doubt. We secured a seat in a competitive school for our eldest, but looking back, the 'necessary' stress was quite avoidable. My advice? Visit the campus during working hours and talk to parents waiting at the gate; their feedback is much more real than the shiny brochures.

If you are sure about the long-term curriculum, go for it. But if you're just doing it because everyone else is, I suggest you try looking at the distance factor first. The daily commute is what burns out the kids, not the school brand. Are you looking at schools within 30 minutes of your home?

It really depends on the school management. We pushed hard for a top-tier school in Grade 1, but found the peer pressure and the 'extra' classes they mandated were just too much for a six-year-old. Sometimes, a smaller, nurturing environment for the early years is better than chasing the big names immediately.
