Is a B.Des degree worth it for the current job market?

Most top universities are offering B.Des programs now, and I’m curious how they stack up in the job market. As an IIT Roorkee design alum, I’ve noticed most of our students seem to be doing well, but I’d love to hear others' perspectives on whether these degrees are truly providing the right skills for today’s industry needs. What are your thoughts?

Is it worth it compared to a standard B.Tech? My son is confused between computer science and design. I am worried about the long-term job security in creative fields.

My daughter is in her 3rd year of B.Des at NID and frankly, the market is quite competitive. It's not just about the degree; the portfolio is everything these days. I suggest you look for programs that offer strong industry internships rather than just theoretical design modules, as recruiters here don't care much for grades.

B.Des is good, but make sure your child is interested in UI/UX specifically. That is where all the money is right now. If they just stick to traditional graphic design, the starting salaries can be quite disappointing compared to engineering roles.

From what I have seen with my niece, the top-tier institutes like IITs or NID have excellent placement cells. However, for the smaller private universities, the 'design' tag is often just a marketing gimmick. Please check the alumni list on LinkedIn before paying those high fees.

It completely depends on the child's passion. If they have the talent, even a basic design course will take them far, but if they are doing it just for the trend, it will be a struggle. My nephew finished his B.Des last year and is doing freelance work instead of a 9-to-5, so the industry is definitely evolving.
