How much do you teach your 4-year-old at home?

I'm curious about how other parents are handling learning at home for a 4-year-old. Are you guys doing any formal teaching or structured activities yet, or do you prefer to let them just play for now? Would love to hear what you are doing to prepare them for school.

Honestly, for a 4-year-old, I think formal teaching is way too much pressure. My daughter is in playschool right now, and I just focus on reading two bedtime stories every night and letting her play with blocks to build her motor skills. Let them be kids for a bit longer; they will have a lifetime of homework later!

Is your child showing interest in writing yet? I have seen that if you force them to hold a pencil too early, they develop a poor grip. We mostly do coloring and clay modeling at home to strengthen his fingers. Are you planning on sending them to a formal school next year?

I suggest you try introducing phonics early. I started using Jolly Phonics flashcards with my son, and it really helped him grasp sounds before starting nursery. Just 10-15 minutes a day is enough, don't overdo it or they will start hating books.

My son is turning 5 soon, and I definitely feel the pressure because the competitive schools in our area expect kids to already know how to write small alphabets. We practice writing for 20 minutes daily, but I make sure to balance it with a lot of outdoor play so he doesn't get burnt out.

Our school follows a very play-based curriculum, so I don't do much extra formal teaching at home. I mostly focus on oral language and conversation, like asking him to explain his day or naming vegetables while I'm cooking. It builds their confidence more than rote memorization.
