Compulsory Kannada till class 8 in Karnataka schools

I'm a bit concerned about the rule requiring Kannada to be taught as a mandatory language until class 8 in Karnataka schools. It seems like this will now be a standard requirement for all schools across the board. Does anyone know how this is being implemented in your kids' schools, or if there are any exceptions for students moving from other states?

Is this actually being enforced strictly for inter-state transfer students? We are moving to Bangalore next month and I am worried about my son struggling with a new language mid-term.

Our school in Whitefield has already started mandatory Kannada classes for all grades up to 8. They have introduced a 'Kannada Kali' module for non-native speakers, which is quite basic, so my daughter doesn't find it too stressful. You should check if your school has a similar bridge program.

I have seen that schools usually provide exemptions for students moving from outside Karnataka if they join after 6th grade, but it varies by board. Best to check the school's circular directly before you commit to admission.

Don't worry too much, most schools are keeping the syllabus very light for CBSE and ICSE students. Just ensure you hire a local tutor for a few months if your child is finding the script difficult to pick up.

Honestly, it is a good initiative for children to learn the local language. My son was initially hesitant, but now he can manage basic grocery shopping in Kannada, which is a useful life skill.
