Is a 6-year stint in Montessori really necessary?

I have been hearing a lot lately that children should stay in a Montessori environment for at least six years to truly benefit from the method. For those of you who have followed this path, do you think it makes a significant difference compared to switching earlier? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on whether sticking with it for the full cycle is worth it.

It's not just about the Montessori method, it's about the emotional stability. My nephew stayed for the full cycle and he is so much more confident compared to his peers who had to switch halfway. If your school has the full cycle, stay put.

I have seen both sides—my elder one stayed for six years and my younger one shifted after three. The difference is in their independence; the six-year kid has much better executive function and focus. It’s worth the long haul.

Does anyone know if switching to a mainstream school in Grade 1 becomes difficult after 6 years of Montessori? I am worried about the sudden shift in environment for my son.

We shifted after four years and I honestly don't feel a huge difference. The basics are strong either way, so don't stress too much if you have to move for logistics.

Honestly, we pulled our daughter out after three years because we were worried about the transition to a formal CBSE board. Looking back, she lacked that final 'finish' in abstract math that the older kids in the six-year cycle seemed to have mastered. If you can afford the time and find a good school, definitely stick with it till the end.
