Is English considered a foreign language?

Since our school is English medium, should we consider English as the one foreign language the kids are learning? I've been thinking about this recently and wanted to see how other parents view our language curriculum.

I have seen parents get confused by this every year. It’s definitely not a foreign language in the Indian context; it’s our window to the world. If you want them to learn a real foreign language, look for those weekend hobby classes instead.

Don't overthink this, dear. It is just the medium of instruction, so treat it as a tool rather than a foreign language. My daughter has been studying it for years and it’s basically her first language now!

Actually, my nephew’s school recently classified English as a 'Language 1' and Hindi as 'Language 2' in their report cards. It’s all about the curriculum design. I wouldn't worry about the label as long as the kids are fluent in both.

That’s an interesting way to look at it, but I suggest you check if your school is offering any actual foreign languages like Spanish or Japanese. Most schools in our area consider English as the primary language and offer a third language, so I’d look into that if I were you.

In my opinion, calling English a 'foreign' language is technically correct but practically misleading in India today. My son has been in English medium since nursery, and honestly, it’s just the language of instruction here, not a subject we study like French or German. If the school is treating it as a foreign language, I would be very worried about the academic standards.
