Every school claims to be 'inclusive.' But what does that mean when your child actually enters the classroom? True inclusion requires more than just an 'open door' policy; it requires structural support, specialized staff, and a culture of empathy.
The SEN Infrastructure Check
- Dedicated Staff: Is there a full-time school counselor and an SEN coordinator (SENCO) on campus?
- Individualized Education Plans (IEP): Does the school have a formal process for creating and reviewing IEPs for students who need extra help?
- Accessibility: Are the school’s physical spaces—labs, sports fields, common rooms—physically accessible?
- Staff Training: Do general education teachers receive ongoing training in inclusive teaching strategies?
The Culture Check
Beyond the infrastructure, observe the culture. Do students celebrate differences? Are there programs that foster empathy for diverse learning abilities? Inclusion should feel natural, not like a 'special' arrangement that separates children from their peers.
