Diwali Shadow Puppet Theatre โ Ramayana Story for Kids
Make shadow puppets of Rama, Sita, Lakshman, and Ravana using cardboard and sticks, then perform the story of Diwali with a torch behind a white sheet.
What you need
- โThick cardboard or card stock
- โPencil, scissors, and a craft knife (parent-supervised)
- โWooden skewers or thin sticks
- โMasking tape
- โA white bedsheet or white chart paper taped to a doorway
- โA torch or phone flashlight
- โBlack poster paint (optional โ for silhouette effect)
How to do it
- 1
Discuss the Ramayana story briefly: Rama, Sita in the forest, Ravana's 10 heads, Hanuman, the return to Ayodhya, and the diyas lit to welcome them home.
- 2
Sketch simple silhouettes on cardboard โ Rama with bow, Sita, Hanuman with his tail, and Ravana with multiple heads. Keep them bold and simple.
- 3
Cut out the shapes. For Ravana's 10 heads, cut a fan shape with rounded bumps at the top.
- 4
Tape a skewer to the back of each puppet, positioned so it hangs balanced when held vertically.
- 5
Hang the white sheet in a doorway. Place the torch about 1 metre behind the sheet, at the same height as the puppets.
- 6
Dim the room lights. Hold puppets between the torch and the sheet โ their shadows appear on the other side.
- 7
Perform the story scene by scene. Encourage your child to narrate as they move the puppets.
๐ก Tips for parents
- โThe closer the puppet is to the sheet, the sharper and smaller the shadow. The further away, the larger and blurrier โ experiment with this.
- โJoint puppets (arms that move) can be made by attaching limbs with a brass fastener.
- โRecord the performance on your phone โ children love watching themselves on screen.
