Christmas Star Lantern (Parol) — Paper Craft for Kids

Make a traditional 5-pointed star lantern (similar to the Filipino Parol, popular in Goa and Kerala) using bamboo sticks, tissue paper, and fringed edges — a beautiful Christmas craft for older children.

What you need

  • 10 thin bamboo sticks or long skewers (30cm each)
  • Red and gold tissue paper
  • Thin wire or strong thread
  • Scissors and PVA glue
  • Gold paint or gold star stickers
  • Ribbon for hanging
  • LED tea light or battery-powered fairy lights

How to do it

  1. 1

Make two identical pentagons by binding 5 bamboo sticks into a star shape (5-pointed) using wire at each joint. This takes patience — do one joint at a time.

  2. 2

Lay both star frames flat. Cut tissue paper into triangular sections that fit each point of the star.

  3. 3

Apply PVA glue to the frame edges and press tissue paper sections over each point, stretching gently. Trim excess.

  4. 4

Cut fringe along the outer edges of each tissue triangle — snip every 5mm without going all the way to the glued edge. This creates the iconic star lantern look.

  5. 5

Glue gold star stickers or paint gold dots at each point junction.

  6. 6

Connect the two star frames back-to-back with wire, leaving a gap at the bottom for the light.

  7. 7

Tuck fairy lights inside or hang an LED tea light from the bottom.

  8. 8

Attach ribbon at the top and hang near a window.

💡 Tips for parents

  • This is a multi-session activity — building the frame on day 1 and covering it on day 2 works well.
  • Younger children can make a simplified flat star ornament using card, tissue paper, and string.
  • The lantern tradition in Goa and Kerala during Christmas is worth exploring — it connects Indian Christmas to global craft traditions.
