Parent-Teacher Meeting Questions: What to Ask Instead of 'How Is My Child Doing?'
A PTM can produce useful clarity or polite nothingness. These questions help parents leave with information they can actually act on.

The default PTM question โ 'How is my child doing?' โ usually gets a vague answer: fine, improving, needs to focus. A better meeting uses specific questions that reveal patterns in academics, friendships, attention, and classroom behaviour.
Better Questions for Any Grade
- 1When does my child seem most engaged during the school day?
- 2Where do you see the biggest gap between ability and output?
- 3How does my child behave in group situations and transitions?
- 4What is one thing we should continue at home and one thing we should change?
- 5If you could adjust one support for my child in class, what would it be?
Questions for Older Students
- How consistent is assignment submission?
- Does my child ask for help when stuck or withdraw quietly?
- Are there signs of stress, perfectionism, or avoidance?
- How are peer relationships affecting classroom participation?
Aim for one next step
A good PTM ends with one shared action for the school and one for home. Without that, the meeting often becomes observation rather than support.
